The Vengaboys, the incomparable 90s pop group, have announced two stripped back versions of two of their best-known hits, in celebration of it being 20 years since they first topped the charts.
The Dutch group, consisting of D Nice, ‘Captain’ Kim Sasabone, Cowboy Donny, and Sailor Robin Pors, released summer anthems ‘Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!! ’ and ‘We’re Going To Ibiza!’ in 1999, with both tracks going straight to No. 1 in the charts, as well as becoming the songs of the summer that year, and becoming multi-platinum hits. They continue to amass over 4 million streams a month on Spotify alone.
Incredibly ‘We’re Going To Ibiza!’ once again is becoming a summer anthem; the song again bursting into the charts as protestors in Austria adopted the track as a protest anthem following a scandal which brought down the far-right government in the country. The Vengaboys were even invited to a celebration rally in Vienna, where they performed to tens of thousands of people, making news worldwide.
On the recordings of the singles, The Vengaboys said:
“At one of our gigs the audience kept on asking for an encore. So we decided – on the spot – to answer their cries with acoustic versions of some of our songs, and they loved it! Now we recorded a bunch of those versions – some backstage, some in hotel rooms. Two of those are being released exactly 20 years after they hit number one around The World”
The band recorded the acoustic version of ‘Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!!’ whilst on tour in Australia earlier this year, backstage in their dressing room, and also recorded ‘We’re Going To Ibiza!’ in their hotel room at the legendary Pikes Hotel in Ibiza.
In 20 years, The Vengaboys have brought their parties to audiences all across the globe, selling 20 million singles and five million albums in the process. In 1999, the group were Holland’s most successful export that year – beating tulips, smokeable agricultural products, and cheese.
Following a hiatus in 2002, the group reconvened in 2007 and have been embarking on their #NonstopWorldTour on the iconic Vengabus ever since, still partying just as hard all these years on – albeit for one EP only a little more quietly!
